ABOUT CHECKMATE

Fact-checking the climate!

An innovative, youth-driven initiative to tackle climate misinformation through critical thinking, fact-checking, and game-based learning.

Mission

To empower young people to become active agents of change by equipping them with the interdisciplinary competencies needed to address climate change and promote sustainable development effectively.

Vision

A sustainable future where young people are deeply engaged in developing and implementing innovative solutions to environmental challenges—fostering resilient communities through education and participatory action.

“One myth at a time, one step closer to climate truth.”

To enhance the capacity of youth workers to address climate misinformation among youth by providing them with innovative tools such as gamified educational resources, and the use of Living Labs to test and apply these resources in real-world settings.

Unlike traditional awareness campaigns, this project equips youth workers and young people with a hands-on, experiential approach using a Climate Myth-Busting Challenge, a multi-role Simulation Game, and co-designed Game-Based Living Labs. It bridges environmental education with media literacy and digital resilience, addressing the emotional and algorithmic nature of misinformation in today’s AI-influenced information landscape. By doing so, Checkmate empowers young people not just to learn, but to become active, critical advocates for climate truth in their communities.

  • Fact-Checking Toolkit – A practical guide for youth workers to spot and tackle climate misinformation.
  • Myth-Busting Challenge – A gamified quiz busting 30 common climate myths.
  • Simulation Game – A 2-hour multi-role game exploring climate misinformation from different perspectives.
  • Game-Based Living Labs – Interactive labs where youth test and co-create anti-misinformation tools.
  • Living Labs Manual – A step-by-step guide to set up and run Game-Based Living Labs effectively.
